Desert stargazing

Head out beyond the city lights with blankets and a star map, and spend an evening learning the night sky.

How to do it

  1. Pick a clear, moonless night and a spot that is easy to reach and safe after dark.
  2. Travel in more than one vehicle if possible, and tell someone where you are going.
  3. Bring water, warm layers, a torch, blankets and a star map app.
  4. Let your eyes adjust for 20 minutes, then find the brightest stars and planets.
