Mafia basics: secret roles, nights and fair play

How social deduction works, how WUDD’s role distributor deals secret cards, and how to play and narrate fairly.

What kind of game this is

Mafia belongs to a large public-domain family of social deduction games, also known by names such as Werewolf. A small hidden group, the Mafia, tries to outlast everyone else, while the Town tries to find them through discussion and voting.

Town players know only their own card, so they read the table: who pushes hard, who stays quiet, whose story changes. Mafia players know each other and try to blend in.

One person does not play: the narrator. WUDD’s app deals the roles; the narrator runs the night and day phases at the table, keeps time and makes sure everyone gets a fair hearing.

Original WUDD lessons, written for WUDD's own tools. They describe no official rules of any branded game.
